5 Things to Check Before Applying for a Credit Card
Applying for a credit card should be a decision, not a guess.
Before submitting your next application, there are several things worth checking that can help you better understand your credit profile, evaluate the timing, and decide whether the card is actually right for you.
In this video, Adam Spencer of Credit Capital Guide walks through 5 things to check before applying for a credit card:
- Your credit reports and scores — Know what is actually being reported before making an application decision.
- Your credit utilization and reported balances — Understand how much of your available revolving credit is currently being reported as used.
- Prequalification options — See whether the issuer offers a way to check for potential offers before submitting a full application.
- Recent applications, inquiries, and new accounts — Consider whether your recent credit activity makes this the right time to apply.
- Whether the card actually fits your needs — Compare the annual fee, APR, rewards, introductory offers, balance-transfer features, and long-term usefulness of the card.
The goal isn’t to guarantee an approval. No checklist can do that.
The goal is to make a better-informed credit decision before using an application and potentially taking a hard inquiry.
Because getting approved for a card that doesn’t fit your needs can still be the wrong outcome.
